Setting up an Online Store

Updated: Sep 28, 2018

Hasn’t everyone purchased something on the internet?

But have you ever thought about what goes on “behind the scenes”? I had the foresight to realize that I would need an online retail store and chose that option when I subscribed with the Wix web hosting service. Now that I needed a store, I went to the Wix website dashboard and followed their instructions. First, I needed pictures of the product. I had Lisa and Alyssa wear the standard and v-neck versions of the shirts in both colors and took pictures of the front and back. I then uploaded those pictures of the SeaClutch branded shirts to the website.

I input all the various options – sizes (M, L, XL), colors (white, blue) and type (v-neck, standard). This was easily done using an online tool that Wix provided, but it was an eye-opening inventory control exercise! Even with something as simple as a few t-shirts, I had 12 distinct products to track!

Wix also has a neat tool that allows you to make a change to the website and then preview it before it goes live. This allows you to try a variety of different looks until you find the one you like. I decided on a clean picture of the back of the shirt, and when the cursor hovers over the picture it changes to the front view.

Here is a link and a screen shot of the shop landing page:

Note the cursor hovering over the middle picture, and how that picture is displayed differently.

Next: Buying something!
